WORLD CUP 2026: WILL NETFLIX’S FIFA GAME CHANGE DIGITAL FOOTBALL FOREVER
FIFA returns: Discover how the new Netflix partnership and Delphi Interactive aim to "redefine" football simulation for 2026.
FIFA games are coming back in 2026 for the World Cup. The first game after the split with EA will be on Netflix.
After 30 years with EA Sports, we knew FIFA games weren't gone for good. Now, the sports group has a new partner for the World Cup next summer.
Netflix is working with FIFA on a new football game for next year's FIFA World Cup. Should EA Sports FC be worried?
When EA stopped using the FIFA license and changed its football game to EA Sports FC, people wondered if there would be any more official FIFA games.
FIFA said it would make new video games, but so far, there's only been FIFA Heroes, a fun arcade game with mascots, from ENVER in New York.
That's not really competition for EA Sports FC. Now, FIFA has made another surprise deal, this time with Netflix Games, for what they call a 'new FIFA football simulation game.'
There aren't many details, but it will only be on Netflix Games around the time of the FIFA World Cup 2026, which is in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
If you're expecting a game as good as EA Sports FC, don't get your hopes up too high. Like other Netflix Games, you'll play it through the streaming service, using your phone as a controller.
Netflix says it will be easy to learn, fun to play well, and good for anyone to just jump in. You can play alone or with friends online.
Delphi Interactive is making the game. They're known for working with IO Interactive on the next 007 game. Last year, Variety said that Delphi hired Mikkel Weider, who used to be the CEO of Nordisk Games, to help them become a big player in gaming.
Casper Daugaard, the founder and CEO of Delphi Interactive, said that football is the biggest thing in the world. He added that as FIFA fans, they are excited about the next generation and changing the future of the game and making the most fun, easy, and global football game ever.
FIFA's president, Gianni Infantino, said they are thrilled to be working with Netflix Games and Delphi Interactive before the FIFA World Cup 2026.
This partnership is a big step in FIFA's plan to try new things in football gaming, reach football fans of all ages everywhere, and change what simulation games usually mean. He added that the game marks the beginning of digital football. It will be free for Netflix members and is a great historical step for FIFA.
Given what Netflix has done in gaming so far, it's hard to know what to expect from a partnership with FIFA. The only sports game on Netflix Games right now is Football Manager 2024 Mobile. Other games include World of Goo and GTA: San Andreas, so don't expect anything amazing.
This comes after Netflix tried to buy Warner Bros., which owns game studios that made games like Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat. Although the gaming part is not the most important.
PUKA NACUA BLASTS NFL REFEREES AND DISCUSSES TAYLOR SWIFT CURSE IN VIRAL LIVESTREAM
Rams WR Puka Nacua is in hot water after calling NFL referees "the worst" and discussing a "Taylor Swift curse" on a live stream.
LA Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua might be in hot water with the NFL after he went after referees during a recent live stream.
Nacua, who's quickly becoming a league star, appeared on a live Twitch video with Adin Ross and N3on this week. Some of the things he said could get him in trouble.
In a clip that went viral, Nacua criticized the league's part-time referees, saying they make bad calls on purpose to get TV time. The NFL higher-ups have probably seen it.
The refs are the worst, Nacua said. These guys are lawyers. They want to be on TV, too.
You don't think he's texting his friends like, 'Yo, you just saw me on 'Sunday Night Football?' That wasn't PI, but I called it.'
The NFL's choice to keep referees as part-time workers, even though it makes billions of dollars, has been a long-standing point of contention, and it seems players have opinions about it as well.
Nacua said that NFL referees make calls to get attention and TV time.
Nacua's comment on referees wasn't the only thing that caused disagreement on the live stream. Some viewers thought he made an antisemitic gesture by copying Ross' celebration.
The streamer asked Nacua to do a touchdown dance when he next scores for the Rams, and they practiced the move on the live stream.
Some viewers said that the last part of the dance looked like it made fun of Jewish people, though there's no evidence Nacua knew that.
Nacua also talked about why the Kansas City Chiefs didn't make the playoffs, blaming it on the 'Taylor Swift curse.'
The Chiefs are in a spot they don't want to be after being knocked out of playoff contention for the first time since 2014. Sunday's 16-13 loss to the LA Chargers was the last straw.
This failure has raised questions about the future of Travis Kelce, who now has to think about whether to play a 14th season or end his NFL career.
But Nacua thinks Kansas City might be better off without Kelce's girlfriend in the stands at Arrowhead.
I mean, they didn't have Rashee Rice, who's their other receiver this year, he said. I don't think they ran the ball well. [Isiah] Pacheco was their running back, right? I don't think he played really well.
Nacua then joked, It's got to be the Swift curse or something like that... after they ran out of a little bit of the juice. Ross and N3on found this funny.
It's not clear what 'curse' Nacua meant. Kansas City did win the Super Bowl in 2024 with Swift in the stands before failing to win a historic 'three-peat' last season.
IS THE WAIT OVER: NEW YORK KNICKS SECURE FIRST TROPHY SINCE 1973 FINALS
After 52 years of waiting, the Knicks are champions again. Can MVP Jalen Brunson lead this squad to an NBA Finals appearance?
The New York Knicks have finally ended their long wait, more than 50 years, for a trophy, defeating the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Cup final.
OG Anunoby scored 28 points in the Knicks' 124-113 victory over the Spurs on Tuesday, grabbing their first trophy since 1973.
Anunoby hit five three-pointers, and Jalen Brunson added 25 points as New York secured the win at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
San Antonio entered the final with confidence after upsetting the Oklahoma City Thunder in the semifinals, thanks to Victor Wembanyama.
However, New York's strong effort stopped San Antonio from winning the cup.
The Knicks held Wembanyama to 18 points and took control in the fourth quarter after trailing by 11 points.
Seven Knicks scored in double figures, with Anunoby and Brunson supported by Karl-Anthony Towns with 16 points, Jordan Clarkson with 15, Tyler Kolek with 14, and Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges with 11 each.
Mitchell Robertson played well defensively off the bench, grabbing 15 rebounds and two blocks.
OG Anunoby, Tyler Kolek, Jordan Clarkson, Mitchell Robertson – they played their butts off tonight, said Brunson, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Without them, we don't win this, Brunson said. We were down 10, but we found a way to win. That's going to be our approach going forward: we're going to find a way.
San Antonio seemed headed for a win when Wembanyama hit a three-pointer with just over two minutes left in the third quarter.
But Clarkson and Kolek hit three-pointers to cut the Spurs' lead to five points, and the Knicks then dominated in the fourth quarter, outscoring their opponents 35-19 to win.
Knicks coach Mike Brown said that winning the title is a good sign for the team's hopes of competing for the NBA Finals in his first season.
Anytime you can be the last team standing and hang up a banner, especially at MSG (Madison Square Garden), you take that seriously, Brown said. And all of our guys took it seriously.
Dylan Harper led San Antonio's scoring with 21 points off the bench, while De'Aaron Fox scored 16 points.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said the team struggled as a whole, which led to their defeat.
I think we struggled more as a team… "We gave up a lot of offensive rebounds, which hurt us," Johnson said.
When we played with the right spacing and tempo, we got some good looks. And we missed them. I think it was more of a team thing than Victor struggling individually.
Johnson believes San Antonio has a lot to build on as they chases Oklahoma City in the Western Conference.
"Playing competitive games against really good teams," Johnson said. Experienced teams that have been in similar situations. Being in those games and experiencing those moments is valuable.
