BREAKING: JUVENTUS SINKS AS ROMA AS LOIS OPENDA NETS HIS FIRST-EVER SERIE A GOAL
See how Juventus dominated Roma in a 2-1 thriller, featuring a debut Serie A goal for Openda and a Conceicao masterclass.
Francisco Conceicao and Lois Openda helped Juventus beat Roma, getting them within a point of Roma's fourth-place spot.
Both coaches had a bunch of players out for this big game. Teun Koopmeiners was suspended, and Federico Gatti, Juan Cabal, and Dusan Vlahovic were injured. Because of that, Gleison Bremer started for the first time since his knee injury back in September. Artem Dovbyk didn't travel with the team, Mario Hermoso wasn't in great shape, and Evan Ndicka and Neil El Aynaoui were at the Africa Cup of Nations. As a result, Roma had to redo their whole defence. Paulo Dybala and Matias Soulé played against their old team, just like Luciano Spalletti.
Dybala tried a shot after a quick pass in the box, but Michele Di Gregorio stopped it. Then, Juventus almost scored when Lois Openda chased down a pass from Khephren Thuram, but Mile Svilar and Devyne Rensch just barely cleared it.
Lorenzo Pellegrini and Thuram couldn't quite finish their chances, and Bremer blocked Manu Koné's shot in the box.
Wesley passed back to Dybala, who missed wide from close range, just ahead of Bremer.
Di Gregorio saved Pellegrini's shot, but Juventus had the best chance of the half. Kenan Yildiz found Francisco Conceicao, who shook past Rensch to force a save from Svilar. Openda's shot after the rebound was deflected over the bar.
Soon after, Juventus scored. Kenan Yildiz passed from the left, Andrea Cambiaso flicked it with his heel, and Conceicao scored into the bottom corner, through Jan Ziolkowski’s legs.
Juventus almost scored again after halftime. Kenan Yildiz and Openda teamed up on the left, and Yildiz's shot flashed across the goal, just missing the far post.
Svilar kept the score close, stopping Francisco Conceicao's flick and then saving a shot from Cambiaso.
The coach of Atalanta swapped out his front three players, while Francisco Conceicao and Bremer left with muscle problems.
Gianluca Mancini headed a corner kick over the bar, but then Juventus made it 2-0. Svilar made a save on Weston McKennie's header from Edon Zhegrova’s cross, but McKennie tapped the rebound to Openda, who scored his first Serie A goal.
Things got worse for Roma when Leon Bailey had to be subbed out because of an injury, just 20 minutes after coming on.
Roma scored when Evan Ferguson's shot was pushed into the path of Tommaso Baldanzi, who scored.
Kenan Yildiz almost made it 3-1, but his shot hit the post as Svilar beat.
In added time, Ferguson got past Daniele Rugani but shot the ball right into Di Gregorio's arms.
ANTONIO CONTE OFFICIALLY DEMANDS TROPHY "JUSTICE" AS NAPOLI FACE BOLOGNA IN RIYADH
Antonio Conte claims the new Supercoppa format is "harder and better" as Napoli prepare for the Bologna final.
Napoli's coach, Antonio Conte, thinks the updated Italian Supercoppa is a bigger deal now as his team gets ready to face Bologna in the final game.
Talking to Sport Mediaset before the game, Conte mentioned that the champion should be decided fairly on the field and liked that the new format made things tougher. "The field decides who wins," he said.
Before, the Supercoppa was just between the league and Coppa Italia winners. Now, the new setup is cool, but harder because there's a semi-final before the final match. So, winning this trophy is a bigger deal now.
Conte thought about the challenge of getting ready for a final match, comparing his experience as a player and a coach. “You prep with videos and practice,” he said. As a player, it's all about using your skill for the team's plan. But as a coach, you have way more on your shoulders.
Conte Is Set on His Plan for Napoli Before the Game Against Bologna
Conte also talked about what he wants for Napoli, recalling what he said when he first started.
When I joined, I said that a place like Naples should have a team that can fight every year, be strong, make life hard for others, and compete for trophies, he said. That's what we're trying for. Last season, we got there fast and won the league, which I didn't see coming.
But this season is about keeping things steady. Now, we're still working hard in the league and cups to build a team that can last, Conte said.
Since penalties might happen, Conte said how they pick who takes them. See who's best in practice. Pick the right person, maybe the player. Sometimes, someone is great in practice but chokes when the pressure's on during the game.
Lastly, Conte gave his view on the final matches. "First, you have to get there, which is tough, he said.
I tell my players that fans remember what you've won in your career, no matter what team you played for. Play like it's your only shot. Talking from his own experience, he said, I've won a lot, but I've lost many finals too. Those losses made me tougher inside, which some don't get.
tough,"
INSTANT REACTION: LUCIANO SPALLETTI SECURES CRITICAL VICTORY AS JUVENTUS TARGETS THE TOP FOUR RACE.
Juventus secures a 2-1 win over Roma. Luciano Spalletti hails a "double victory" but warns Zhegrova over defensive lapses in Turin.
Luciano Spalletti thinks Juventus not only beat Roma but also learned something from their aggressive style. Though he did mention Edon Zhegrova's, let's say, not-so-great defending.
Juventus knew this game was super important. Losing would've put them pretty far behind in the race to get in the top four.
Instead, Francisco Conceicao and Lois Openda scored, winning the game 2-1 and putting Juve just one point behind Roma.
But Spalletti was annoyed about that late goal by Tommaso Baldanzi, which he blamed on Zhegrova messing up.
Spalletti had both good and bad things to say about Juventus.
He said, A game is like a blank canvas. You can't just throw in what you're good at. You also have to do the stuff you don't like.
He gave Yildiz as an example. Yildiz went back to help defend. Other teams know how good he is, but I don’t think he knows it yet, or how others already see him.
He does what needs to be done. When you play a team like Roma, who are well-balanced and always attacking with their defenders and wing-backs, you need guys like Yildiz and Conceicao helping out; otherwise, they'll break through.
“Zhegrova can't really do that kind of defending right now. He's awesome when he's attacking. So, I need to make sure he's in a position where he can just do that. If not, we're in trouble.
Spalletti added, I don't think Zhegrova will ever be a great defender. It's just not him. When he has to defend, he kind of disappears.
He can run back, but sometimes you need to grab your opponent and get physical. That's not his thing.
Spalletti also shouted out for Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma. Even though they didn't have many scoring chances, they controlled the ball a lot in the first half.
Roma will keep at it, but we're not like that. We have moments where we lose focus, give the ball away too easily, and lose track of our wing-backs. They switch sides a lot, so if we don't force them in one direction, we waste energy chasing them.
Even if they weren't too dangerous, their rhythm, consistency, and solid play caused us problems in the first half. We also didn't do a great job on counterattacks. Their constant pressure wears you down, and you don't have the energy to counter.
Gasperini’s teams trap you, and you feel like you have to break free. There’s always someone on your back.”
This is Juventus' second big win in a row. They also passed Bologna after winning 1-0 last week.
Francisco Conceicao and Gleison Bremer, who were starting for the first time since their injuries, both left the game with minor muscle issues.
Juventus seem to be finding their groove under Spalletti, winning six of their last seven games, only losing to Napoli.
With no more big games coming up, does this mean Juve can catch up to the top teams?
Spalletti laughed and said, I feel like biting you when you ask that.
What do you mean, no big games? They’re all tough now. If you win and pick up things from the teams you beat, that's a huge win because it gives you confidence and shows you can compete with anyone.
We kept pushing until the end, and even after conceding that late goal, the team wanted more. Now we'll keep grinding and try to make up some ground.”
