CONTE'S KEY WEAPON: ROMELU LUKAKU'S COMEBACK FOR NAPOLI'S FIRST TROPHY HUNT
Romelu Lukaku is back on the squad for Napoli's Supercoppa match against AC Milan after a long injury layoff. Conte gets a major boost.
Romelu Lukaku's bad dream is ending. The Napoli striker is on the team for the Supercoppa Italiana game against AC Milan. After not playing at all in 2025-26, the Belgian is going to Saudi Arabia. This is great news for Antonio Conte, who wants to win his first trophy of the season.
Lukaku is going to Napoli
After working hard to get better from a bad thigh injury in the pre-season, the 32-year-old forward left Naples Capodichino airport on Tuesday afternoon for Riyadh. He's now on the team list after 124 days of recovery, which club people say was one of the hardest times of his career.
A bad setback in August
Lukaku's season got messed up in August when he got hurt in a friendly game against Olympiacos. People thought it was a small hit, but it turned out to be a high-grade tear in his rectus femoris that needed surgery. This kept him out of the first half of the Serie A season.
Conte really wanted to work with Lukaku again, so this was a big loss. Napoli had to play the first few months without their big summer signing. They used Lorenzo Lucca and Rasmus Hojlund, who came in late, to lead the attack. The team has done okay, staying close to Serie A leaders Inter, but they've missed Lukaku's strength, especially in the Champions League.
Can Lukaku get back on track in Riyadh?
His return is happening at a perfect time. Napoli is playing AC Milan in the Supercoppa semi-final in Riyadh on Thursday, December 18. It's a tough game against a rival, and Lukaku can use it to show he's back.
He's been practising with the team since early December, even telling reporters, "See you soon," at a practice last week. But Conte didn't want to rush him back. He didn't play in the Champions League game against Benfica, so he could be ready for this tournament.
Reports say that Lukaku is going and can play, but he'll probably start on the bench. The doctors say he's okay to play, but he still needs to get his match fitness back. Conte might use him as a substitute, hoping he can make the Milan defenders nervous since they've had trouble with him before.
Conte's key player
Lukaku played 36 games and scored 14 goals when Napoli won the Serie A title last season. They haven't been steady lately, losing two games in a row before going to Saudi Arabia. This tournament is a chance to start over and get Lukaku into the team.
With the game against Milan coming up and a possible final against Inter or Bologna, Napoli fans hope Lukaku can make up for lost time. If he can play as he did before under Conte, people will forget about the last four months. After that, Napoli will play Cremonese in Serie A.
TRANSFER TARGET: MILAN DREAMS OF JOSHUA ZIRKZEE DESPITE NICLAS FULLKRUG LOAN AGREEMENT
Milan has a preliminary loan agreement for Niclas Fullkrug, but remains focused on signing Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee, despite the difficult negotiations ahead.
Reports out Tuesday say that even though Milan could grab Niclas Fullkrug from West Ham, they still want Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee in January.
Milan's Stance on Fullkrug and Zirkzee
Milan wants another attacker this January. Massimiliano Allegri usually uses a 3-5-2 setup at San Siro. Even though Christian Pulisic, Rafael Leao, and Christopher Nkunku have played up front this season, Santiago Gimenez, who is injured, is Milan’s only true centre-forward.
Because of this, Milan has been checking out their choices for January. Sources say they have a basic agreement for a possible Fullkrug loan.
The German player will likely be available for a simple loan until the season ends, which is good for Milan. His wages aren't a problem either.
But his past injuries and few goals with West Ham are a worry. The 32-year-old hasn't scored since the 2-2 tie with AFC Bournemouth on April 5.
Fullkrug has also been injured a lot while in East London. He missed 16 games in 2024 because of an Achilles issue, another 12 games in January 2025 with a thigh injury, and then another month and a half in October due to a muscle problem.
Because of these concerns, Milan is still interested in Zirkzee, who used to play for Bologna, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Milan has reportedly been talking to Zirkzee's agents lately. Reports on Tuesday say he might leave Old Trafford, but talks with Manchester United won't be easy.
La Gazzetta dello Sport says that United wants a loan deal with a required purchase option of about €35m if they let Zirkzee leave in January. Roma is also watching the Dutch player, so Milan isn't the only team interested.
BACK-TO-BACK WINS: SCAMACCA'S DOUBLE ENDS ATALANTA'S 10-GAME LEAGUE SLUMP
Fresh off a Champions League win over Chelsea, Gianluca Scamacca's brilliant double secured a vital 2-1 Serie A win for Atalanta, ending their 10-game slump.
Atalanta had a great week, capped off by a win over Cagliari thanks to two goals from Gianluca Scamacca. Gianluca Gaetano scored for Cagliari to tie the game briefly.
Coming off a Champions League win against Chelsea, Atalanta needed a Serie A victory, having only one in their last 10 tries. Cagliari was missing key players due to injuries, just like Atalanta.
Early on, Charles De Ketelaere set up Ademola Lookman, whose shot was saved. De Ketelaere then shot the rebound, but it hit the side of the net.
Soon after, Lookman got to the left side and passed the ball back to Davide Zappacosta. Zappacosta's shot was going off course, but Scamacca redirected it into the goal with a clever back-heel.
Lorenzo Bernasconi stopped Marco Palestra from getting a clear shot on goal. Then, Lookman's shot was blocked for a corner.
Scamacca shot straight at the Cagliari keeper, Elia Caprile, after a nice pass from De Ketelaere. Caprile then made a super one-handed save on a close-range shot from Lookman. De Ketelaere's follow-up shot was deflected onto the roof of the net.
Right before halftime, Cagliari almost tied the game, but Gennaro Borrelli's header went just wide.
Berat Djimsiti hurt his thigh and had to be taken out of the game. Atalanta started to look tired after playing in Europe during the week.
Cagliari took advantage and tied the game with fantastic team play. Folorunsho passed to Gianluca Gaetano, who passed it back to Sebastiano Esposito quickly, and then he scored with a shot past the goalkeeper.
Scamacca put Atalanta back in front when he scored on the loose ball after his volley attempt didn't work out.
Nicola Zalewski forced Caprile to make two tough saves.
Zito Luvumbo scored for Cagliari late in the game, but the goal didn't count because Folorunsho was offside.
