FROM STRASBOURG TO STAMFORD BRIDGE? THE TRUTH BEHIND LIAM ROSENIOR’S SHOCK CHELSEA LINKS
From Ligue 1 success to Stamford Bridge? Explore Liam Rosenior’s credentials as Chelsea searches for a new head coach in 2026.
Strasbourg boss and former Premier League defender Liam Rosenior is in the mix to take over at Chelsea after Enzo Maresca’s exit.
Chelsea already knows Rosenior dreams of managing in the Premier League. Now, with reports swirling about a possible approach for the 41-year-old, the timing feels right. Maresca’s time at Stamford Bridge ended after 18 months—a rough patch with the board, poor form, and only one win in the last seven league games. Chelsea sits fifth in the league, a whopping 15 points behind Arsenal.
On New Year’s Day, the club put out a statement: “Chelsea Football Club and Head Coach Enzo Maresca have parted company. During his time at the club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions. With big targets still on the table—including a Champions League spot—both Enzo and the club agreed a change was needed to get the season back on track. We wish Enzo all the best.”
There’s no shortage of names being thrown around as Maresca’s replacement, but Rosenior stands out. The Mirror even calls him the ‘leading candidate.’ He’s caught the eye at Strasbourg, and the BlueCo network has seen him as a possible future Chelsea boss for a while. Right now, his Strasbourg team sits seventh in Ligue 1 and leads their Conference League group.
Rosenior’s journey started at Derby County as a coach, then he took over Hull City for a season and a half before joining Strasbourg in July 2024. He’s been clear about his ambitions. In a Coaches’ Voice piece from July 2024, Rosenior said, “My ambition now is to manage in the Premier League, and I feel ready—not least because the games where I have been at my best as a coach have been possession-based. Maybe it’s not going to be my next step, but the next step has to be to give myself, my staff, and my club the best opportunity to be a Premier League team next season.”
He said that before heading to France, but Chelsea can take encouragement from his words. Rosenior also played 141 times in the Premier League—he knows the league inside out.
REVEALED: THE SECRET TACTICAL PROJECT XAVI DEMANDED BEFORE ACCEPTING THE CHELSEA JOB OFFER
Chelsea has sacked Enzo Maresca following a breakdown in relations. Discover why Barcelona legend Xavi is the top target for 2026.
With Enzo Maresca out at Chelsea, Xavi's previous interest in managing in the Premier League is back in the spotlight.

Maresca's departure from the Premier League club happened quickly. Tensions had been building at Stamford Bridge for weeks, as they had only managed one win in their last seven games. Fans made their feelings clear after the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.
Maresca hinted at problems after Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Everton last month. The last 48 hours have been the worst since I joined. "I didn't feel supported," he said.
When asked to explain, Maresca repeated that he felt unsupported. Now, Chelsea is looking for a new manager, and Barcelona legend Xavi is available.
Xavi has been without a job since leaving Camp Nou in May 2024. He has admitted that he would find a Premier League job hard to resist. Of course, I would consider it. "I don't know where," the Spaniard told The Athletic earlier this year.
I'm in no rush, but I want a good project. Somewhere, I have four years to build something. I'd love to work in the Premier League because I love the passion. In Spain, it's too focused on results.
I'd also be interested in managing a national team; to coach at a World Cup or European Championship is a dream. It's not clear if Chelsea will have a new head coach in place for their game against Manchester City on Sunday.
While Xavi is a contender to replace Maresca, Liam Rosenior seems to be the frontrunner. Rosenior is currently in charge of Strasbourg, which is owned by Chelsea's parent company, and is seen as the most likely choice.
The statement confirming Maresca's exit said, "Chelsea Football Club and Head Coach Enzo Maresca have parted ways." Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Those wins will always be a key part of the club's history, and we thank him. With big aims still to achieve across four competitions, including Champions League qualification, Enzo and the Club agree that a change gives the team the best chance to improve. We wish Enzo all the best.
The new manager at Stamford Bridge will inherit a team still competing on all fronts, but the team needs fresh energy to get its season back on track.

Chelsea has announced that Enzo Maresca is leaving. The club's feelings were clear in their statement.
After a rocky run with some notable comments from the head coach, Chelsea put out a 99-word statement about Enzo Maresca's departure. He had about three years left on a contract that was supposed to last until 2029.
Chelsea has only won one of their last seven games. They're sitting 15 points behind Arsenal and only five points ahead of Brighton.
The club said Chelsea and Enzo Maresca have split ways. During his time here, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
We thank him for what he's done. These wins will remain a key part of our history. With big goals ahead in four competitions, including Champions League qualification, Enzo and the club think this switch gives the team the best chance to get back on track. We wish Enzo the best.
Football.london said that Maresca needed better results to stay. But it looks like the decision to let him go was made anyway.
After Chelsea's win over Everton on December 13th, Maresca's press conference created a rift with the club's leaders.
Maresca said, The players are learning so well, and that's why I praise them. Even with so many problems, they're doing a great job after a tough week.
Since I joined, the last two days have been the worst because many people didn't back us.
He explained that his comments were about the hierarchy.
Maresca clarified, in general, making it clear he wasn't talking about supporters or journalists. I love the fans, and we are happy with them.
Things got worse after the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. Maresca skipped his media duties because he 'felt unwell.' After that, there was no coming back, and his departure was announced on New Year's Day.
Reportedly, Man City is eyeing the Italian to possibly replace Pep Guardiola if he leaves.
Chelsea chiefs are said to admire Liam Rosenior, the former Hull City boss who is now in charge of Strasbourg.
