TRANSFER ALERT: LIVERPOOL EYE JULIAN RYERSON AS CONOR BRADLEY RULED OUT FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON

Liverpool is targeting Borussia Dortmund's Julian Ryerson after Conor Bradley's season-ending injury. Read the latest transfer news.

Transfer Alert: Liverpool eye Julian Ryerson as Conor Bradley ruled out for the rest of the season
Julian Ryerson’s tactical discipline is exactly what Arne Slot needs

Julian Ryerson is popping up as a possible answer to Liverpool’s defensive headaches, at least according to Absolut Fussball. The Borussia Dortmund defender brings plenty of experience, and you can see why Liverpool would be interested, especially since they’re scrambling to replace the injured Conor Bradley.

Let’s be honest, Liverpool’s defence hasn’t had it easy this season. They’ve leaked too many crucial goals and lost key players to injury. Early on, they lost Giovanni Leoni, their promising summer signing, to a brutal ACL tear that ended his season before it really began. Their recent draw against Arsenal didn’t help either—Bradley picked up a nasty knee injury, and he’s out for the rest of the year after surgery. With Leoni missing, Joe Gomez—who’s never exactly been the picture of health—has had to step in at centre-back. Now with Bradley down too, Liverpool’s defensive depth is looking thinner than ever.

Jeremie Frimpong just got back from a hamstring issue, but he’s mostly been playing on the wing, not in defence. So, let’s face it, Liverpool needs a new right-back, and Ryerson is starting to look like the guy they want.

Apparently, Dortmund values Ryerson at around €20 million. But he’s so important to them, it’s going to take more than that to get him. Liverpool will have to decide if they’re ready to pay up for the Norwegian, who’s been in great form lately.

Is Ryerson really the right fit for Liverpool? At first, they probably weren’t planning on signing a right-back this January. But Bradley’s injury forced their hand. Out of all the options out there, Ryerson checks a lot of boxes—he’s experienced, solid defensively, and isn’t afraid to get forward.

He’d be a strong addition, and his experience could be a real boost for Liverpool as they head into the crunch part of the season. Dortmund manager Niko Kovac is pretty happy with Ryerson and probably doesn’t want to let him go. Ryerson himself seems content in Germany, but if Liverpool comes calling with a big offer and the promise of a key role, who knows? That might just turn his head.

LIVERPOOL FANS FUME AS SZOBOSZLAI’S SIX-YARD BOX MISTAKE STUNS THE KOP

Dominik Szoboszlai went from hero to villain at Anfield, scoring a 25-yard worldie before gifting Barnsley a goal with a backheel.

Dominik Szoboszlai gifts Barnsley a goal after a bizarre backheel

Barnsley found themselves gifted a goal at Anfield, all thanks to a wild lapse in judgment from Dominik Szoboszlai. Out of nowhere, Szoboszlai tried this flashy backheel pass inside his own six-yard box. It went about as badly as you’d expect.

Funny thing is, not long before that, Szoboszlai looked like the hero. He’d just hammered in a 25-yard rocket to put Liverpool ahead, settling the nerves after Barnsley actually started brighter. Liverpool seemed to have things under control, especially once Jeremie Frimpong smashed in a beauty in the 36th minute. At 2-0, you figure that’s probably it for Barnsley.

But then, right before halftime, everything changed. Adam Phillips, who used to play for Liverpool, chased down a loose ball in the box. Szoboszlai tried to keep it away from him, but his touch was heavy, and suddenly he’s dribbling across his own goalmouth. Phillips kept chasing, and when Szoboszlai went for that ridiculous backheel, he missed the ball completely. Phillips just tapped it in. Easiest goal he’s ever scored. Barnsley cut the deficit and went into the break just 2-1 down.

Szoboszlai looked absolutely crushed—head down, hands on knees, probably wishing the pitch would swallow him. Barnsley fans were loving it, cheering like mad, while Liverpool fans just grumbled and shook their heads.

On social media, Liverpool supporters didn’t hold back. “Pure arrogance,” one fan snapped on X. “He got what he deserved.”

Even the commentators were stunned. Ally McCoist on TNT Sports couldn’t believe it. “He does well to get back; he’s done the hard part, and then—does he try to stand on the ball or backheel it? He goes for the backheel! What is he thinking? That’s incredible. Absolutely incredible. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player of that quality try something like that in such a dangerous spot. I’m stunned.”

Steve McManaman, ex-Liverpool winger, looked furious at halftime. “I don’t like it at all from Szoboszlai. You’d never do that against Arsenal or Manchester City. Why he’s pulling that against Barnsley, I’ll never know. Maybe something’s going on in his head…he was flicking the ball around earlier and looked so comfortable. But you just don’t do that there. I didn’t like it.”

END OF THE MO SALAH ERA? ARNE SLOT TARGETS PSG STAR FOR ANFIELD REBUILD

As Mohamed Salah’s future at Anfield wavers, Liverpool is reportedly "doing the groundwork" for a summer move for Bradley Barcola.

Salah scores for Egypt as Liverpool move for Barcola

Liverpool is back in the hunt for a new winger after missing out on Antoine Semenyo.

This week, Semenyo swapped Bournemouth for Manchester City in a £65 million move. City moved fast and triggered his release clause, leaving Liverpool watching as one of their main targets joined a Premier League rival. Plenty of top clubs showed interest, but City got their man early.

Now, Liverpool has to shift focus. Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola is at the top of their list. According to Caught Offside, Liverpool are actually leading the race for Barcola ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea. They seem pretty keen on the 23-year-old and see him as a potential long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah.

Salah’s contract runs until 2027, but things have changed under Arne Slot. He’s lost his automatic spot in the starting lineup and could end up leaving before his deal runs out. Liverpool has apparently done the most groundwork for Barcola and wants to build a new-look attack around him.

Barcola’s not playing as much as he’d like at PSG these days. With Khvicha Kvaratskhelia arriving last year and Desire Doue’s stock rising, Barcola’s been on the fringes. He can play both wings, though, which is exactly the kind of versatility Liverpool needs right now.

Cody Gakpo has struggled this season, and Slot doesn’t have many senior options on the left. Besides Gakpo, the only other option is 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha, who’s barely seen any game time.

There’s still a chance Barcola could stay put in Paris. Luis Enrique is leaving PSG at the end of the season, and whoever comes in next might give Barcola a bigger role. One source told Caught Offside that Liverpool’s interest is strong, and if Barcola’s situation doesn’t improve, he’ll definitely consider moving. But a lot depends on who PSG hire as manager.

Meanwhile, Salah’s not coming back to Liverpool just yet. He scored the winner for Egypt in their 3-2 victory over Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals. Egypt plays Senegal on Wednesday night, with the third-place play-off on Saturday and the final set for Sunday, January 18.
