MATHEUS CUNHA SAVES FIFTH-PLACE UNITED IN A GRITTY ELLAND ROAD BATTLE
1-1 at Elland Road! Discover how Brenden Aaronson nearly secured a Leeds win before Matheus Cunha saved a point for Man United.
Manchester United and Leeds United battled to a gritty 1-1 draw at Elland Road. Brenden Aaronson struck for Leeds, Matheus Cunha answered for United, and neither side found a winner.
This result keeps United sitting fifth in the Premier League. Leeds, meanwhile, stay eight points clear of the drop in 16th place.
The first half had bite. United started strong, controlled most of the ball, but Leeds looked sharp whenever they broke forward. Leny Yoro nearly grabbed his first Premier League goal for United—his header off a Luke Shaw corner skimmed just wide. Leeds almost snatched the lead too; Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header rattled the post, but that was as close as anyone got before halftime.
After the break, Calvert-Lewin threatened again, only to see a United defender block his shot at close range. Then Gabriel Gudmundsson forced a sharp save from Senne Lammens, winning a corner for Leeds. United cleared and countered quickly, but Manuel Ugarte’s shot missed the target.
Leeds came out firing after the restart, pressing high and dominating possession. Sesko had a look at the goal, but the flag went up for offside. At the other end, Yoro stood strong for United, while Lammens made a brilliant save, tipping Calvert-Lewin’s close-range header over the bar. Another corner from Stach caused chaos, but United somehow survived.
United’s defense dug in deep but finally cracked. Aaronson pounced on a sloppy moment from Ayden Heaven, coolly finishing past Lammens to put Leeds in front.
United didn’t waste time responding. Leeds switched off for a moment, and Cunha made them pay, slotting home to tie it up.
Leeds almost hit back straight away. Gudmundsson launched a long throw that found Noah Okafor, who tried an overhead kick. He didn’t catch it clean, but the ball drifted dangerously toward the far post—Lammens scrambled and pushed it away.
From there, the game opened up. United edged possession, and Sesko had a big chance after Joshua Zirkzee zipped a low cross into the box, but Sesko couldn’t keep his shot on target.
Cunha kept causing problems, nearly scoring again, but the offside flag cut his celebration short.
Later on, Leeds substitute Joël Piroe came close to stealing it, sending a shot just over the bar.
That was that. Both teams had their moments—big saves, tough tackles, and chances at both ends—but neither could find a winner. A 1-1 draw felt fair.
Next up, United head to Burnley on Wednesday night. Leeds are off to face Newcastle at St. James’ Park.
THE FINAL INSULT: WHAT RUBEN AMORIM SAID ABOUT THE BOARD BEFORE BEING SACKED SUDDENLY
Manchester United sack Ruben Amorim after a 15th-place finish and a fiery rant. Darren Fletcher takes over as interim manager.
Manchester United finally decided it's time for a change. They’ve sacked head coach Ruben Amorim. He only joined in late 2024, stepping in after Erik ten Hag got the boot, but things just kept going south between Amorim and the club’s higher-ups.
Things really hit the breaking point on Sunday. After drawing with Leeds at Elland Road, Amorim didn’t hold back—he openly criticised the club’s direction and leadership. Not surprisingly, United quickly put out a statement confirming his exit. It read, “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United. Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May. With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly decided that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity for the highest possible Premier League finish. The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future. Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
Amorim came in with a big reputation from Portugal, but he just couldn’t make it work at Old Trafford. Sure, he got United to the Europa League final—though they lost to Spurs—but the league campaign was a disaster. United finished 15th, their lowest ever in the Premier League.
The club splashed out in the summer, spending over £200 million to overhaul their attack with Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha. Even with all those new faces, United’s form didn’t really improve. Twenty games in, they’d only managed eight wins, seven draws, and five losses. Lately, things looked even worse—just one win in their last five games.
After the Leeds match, Amorim basically called out the board, saying, “I know that my name is not Tuchel, is not Conte, and is not Mourinho, but I'm the manager of Manchester United. It's going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decides to change. That was my point. I want to finish with that. I'm not going to quit. I will do my job until the other guy comes here to replace me. I just want to say that I'm going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. I was really clear on that. That is going to finish in 18 months, and then everyone is going to move on. That was the deal. That is my job, not to be a coach.”
He’d also made it clear he wasn’t happy about United’s quiet approach to the current transfer window, especially considering all the injuries.
Now, former United midfielder Darren Fletcher steps in as interim boss. The club looks set to wait until the summer to name a permanent replacement.
BREAKING: MANCHESTER UNITED SACK RUBEN AMORIM AFTER EXPLOSIVE BOARDROOM RANT AT LEEDS
Manchester United sack Ruben Amorim after 14 months. Explore the fallout from his fiery rant and Darren Fletcher's interim move.
Manchester United stunned everyone by sacking Ruben Amorim after his fiery outburst following the draw at Leeds. He didn’t hold back in his post-match press conference, sending a pointed message straight to the United board. By the next day, he was out.
According to The Athletic, United acted fast, ending Amorim’s 14-month spell in charge. Darren Fletcher, a former United midfielder and now the under-18s coach, is set to step in for their Premier League clash with Burnley on Wednesday night.
Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox made the call. Fletcher could stick around as interim boss until the end of the season, with United planning to find a permanent manager afterwards.
On Sunday, when someone asked Amorim if he still had the board’s backing, he just let loose. “Guys, let’s stop with that. I know you’re getting selective information. I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not just the coach. That’s clear,” he snapped.
He kept going: “My name isn’t Tuchel, Conte, or Mourinho, but I’m the manager here. That’s how it’ll be for 18 months or until the board says otherwise. I’m not quitting. I’ll do my job until someone else comes in.
“I want to make this clear—I’m here to manage the team, not just coach it. After 18 months, we all move on. That was the deal. If people can’t handle the criticism—if we can’t take the Gary Nevilles and all that—maybe the club needs to change. I came here to be the manager, not the coach. Every department, from scouting to the sporting director, has a job to do. I’ll do mine for 18 months, and then that’s it. Thanks, guys.”
Amorim took over from Erik ten Hag in November 2024. His first season was rough—United finished down in 15th and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham.
Right now, United sits sixth in the league after drawing 1-1 with both Wolves and Leeds. Amorim leaves with just 24 wins from his 63 games in charge since coming from Sporting Lisbon.
Things have been tense lately. Amorim’s been frustrated about his role in transfer decisions and has clashed with the club’s higher-ups, especially over the January window.
On Christmas Eve, he said, “If we want to play a perfect 3-4-3, we need to spend a lot and have time. I’m starting to realise that’s just not going to happen, so maybe I need to adapt.”
Injuries haven’t helped. Club captain Bruno Fernandes has been out, and Bryan Mbeumo, Amad, and Noussair Mazraoui are away at the Africa Cup of Nations. United have only won three of their last 11 league games. After missing out on Europe and getting dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Grimsby in their first match, the Premier League is all they’ve got left.
