SKY SPORTS CONFIRMS MANCHESTER UNITED HAVE EXPLORED CONDITIONS FOR A CARLOS BALEBA TRANSFER
Manchester United have explored a move for Brighton's Carlos Baleba. Discover why the Seagulls are demanding a record £100m fee.
Manchester United wants to test Brighton’s resolve for Carlos Baleba this month, or so the story goes.
A Sky Sports reporter who covers the South Coast said United have been talking about moving for Baleba in January. The midfielder’s currently in good form for Cameroon at AFCON, bracing for a tough last-16 showdown with Nigeria. If Cameroon loses, he’ll head back to club football just in time for Brighton’s FA Cup clash at Old Trafford.
Brighton, though, keeps saying the same thing they’ve said since last summer—they’re not selling. The Argus has repeated it for months: Baleba stays with the Seagulls at least until season’s end.
Fabian Hurzeler is banking on Baleba’s AFCON momentum, plus having Pascal Gross back in the fold, to really get his club season going.
Even so, Sky’s Mark McAdam thinks United are ready to move. He told viewers United have already looked into a possible deal for Baleba this window. They like him. They’ve checked in before, and they’re doing it again. Brighton’s response? Same as always: “Baleba is not for sale; we rate him too highly, and we’re not interested in selling him—especially not in January.”
United do have other midfield names on their radar—Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Joao Gomes—but Baleba’s a big one. He’s committed to Brighton until June 2029, so the club holds all the cards.
Right now, United sits sixth in the Premier League. Just three points off Liverpool in the last Champions League spot, but honestly, people feel they could be punching higher.
Manager Amorim isn’t promising much action this month. Just two weeks ago, he said, “We’ll see” about any moves. Now? He’s shutting that talk down. “The transfer window isn’t going to change. We’re not having conversations about changing the squad. We have a process and an idea, and we’re sticking to it. We’re close to the Champions League places, but there are eight teams right behind us, so let’s just focus on the next game. That’s it. Win the next one.”
United have looked at Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, though it seems City might get him. Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo have also been linked with possible January exits.
And when someone asked Amorim if any players have come knocking on his door to leave, he said, “No, none. I don’t expect them to ask.”
WHY RUBEN AMORIM BELIEVES MANU KONE IS THE ULTIMATE CASEMIRO REPLACEMENT
Manchester United told to pay £52m for Roma's Manu Kone. Plus, why the Jean-Philippe Mateta transfer is currently stuck in limbo.
Manchester United have been told they’ll need to pay £52 million if they want to beat out other big clubs for AS Roma’s Manu Kone.
Right now, United desperately needs help in a few spots. Ruben Amorim’s tactics aren’t exactly fixing things, either. Sure, the club had a decent summer—they managed to sell off most of their surplus players, and they spent around £230 million bringing in Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Senne Lammens.
Sesko’s drawn some criticism, but honestly, Mbeumo, Cunha, and Lammens hit the ground running. They’ve already become key players for the team.
Everyone expects United to shake up their midfield this year. They’re hunting for someone to take over from Casemiro in the long run, and rumours keep swirling about possible exits for Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, and Manuel Ugarte.
Carlos Baleba, Elliot Anderson, and Adam Wharton have all been linked with moves to United. Now Manu Kone’s name is in the mix, too.
Apparently, Kone is seen as an ideal fit for Amorim’s squad. Italian journalist Francesca Teodori even claims the deal’s basically a done deal. She says she’s heard from several sources that Kone will leave Roma in June and join Manchester United. There’s some talk he could be involved in a swap deal with Joshua Zirkzee, but that part’s still up in the air. What’s clear isthat Kone wants the move, and the transfer could go through this summer.
Meanwhile, Calciomercato reports that Roma wants to keep Koné until the end of the season, and they’ve slapped a €60 million (£52m) price tag on him. They’re trying to hold off interest not just from United, but also Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid.
On top of that, United is having a tough time chasing Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta. According to journalist Dean Jones at TEAMtalk, Palace’s head coach Oliver Glasner is making everything more complicated. The word is, if Glasner leaves at the end of the season—which seems likely—Palace wants their next manager to help decide Mateta’s future. So, for now, that transfer’s stuck in limbo.
MANCHESTER UNITED MONITOR JEAN-PHILIPPE MATETA SITUATION AS CRYSTAL PALACE CONTRACT TALKS STALL TODAY
Manchester United track Jean-Philippe Mateta and Jeremy Jacquet. Discover the latest on Sam Mather’s potential move to Turkey here.
Manchester United have had their eye on Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta for a while now. Even though they aren’t chasing a new striker right this second, they might get serious about Mateta if he pops up on the market.
Mateta’s a big part of Oliver Glasner’s plans at Palace, but his contract’s winding down—he’ll be in his final year come July. Last summer, plenty of clubs wanted him, and Palace actually turned down bids up to £50 million from Champions League teams. There was some late interest from Tottenham, too, but they didn’t make a formal offer and ended up bringing in Randal Kolo Muani on loan from PSG at the last minute. Atalanta, AC Milan, Juventus, and a handful of Premier League teams were also sniffing around the 28-year-old.
For now, though, United’s main focus is the next summer window, and they’re really looking to bring in a defensive midfielder.
That said, they’re keeping tabs on centre backs, too. United is one of the clubs watching Stade Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet. He’s just 20, and a lot of teams are interested, but a January move looks tricky. Things could move quickly if someone else jumps in for Jacquet this month. Back in August 2025, Palace was keen on the France U21 international, but Rennes wanted to keep him for at least one more season. Since then, Jacquet signed a new deal that keeps him at Rennes until 2029.
Switching gears—United might let young winger Sam Mather leave for Kayserispor in Turkey. The Turkish side has been after him since the summer, but they ran out of time to get a deal done. Now they’ve put in a formal offer, and United are thinking it over. Mather was part of the United youth squad that lifted the FA Youth Cup in 2022, playing alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho. Injuries have slowed him down, and he hasn’t broken into the first team, but he’s picked up some senior experience on loan at Rochdale and Tranmere.
