WHY ACHRAF HAKIMI’S RETURN MAKES MOROCCO THE FAVORITES IN MOROCCO 2025

Achraf Hakimi is set for his first AFCON 2025 appearance. Discover why the PSG star is frustrated with booing Moroccan supporters.

Why Achraf Hakimi’s Return Makes Morocco the Favorites in Morocco 2025
Can Hakimi Lead Morocco to Victory Against Zambia

Coach Walid Regragui says Achraf Hakimi, the African player of the year, is ready to play in his first Africa Cup of Nations game for Morocco against Zambia on Monday.

Regragui mentioned on Sunday that Hakimi's effort to get back on the field has been amazing. He confirmed that Achraf will be playing.

He also added that whether he starts or not, it will be Hakimi's first match in the AFCON.

The coach hopes Hakimi will gel with the team and stay with them for the entire competition, as they're aiming for a long run.

Hakimi has been out of action since early November due to an ankle injury he picked up playing for Paris Saint-Germain. He was on the bench for Morocco's first two Cup of Nations games but didn't play.

Even without Hakimi, Morocco managed to beat Comoros 2-0 in their first game. The Friday game against Mali ended in a 1-1 tie.

With four points from two games, Morocco is leading Group A. If they win against Zambia, they'll make it to the last 16 as group winners. Even a draw will get them into the knockout stage.

Regragui pointed out that people might underestimate Hakimi's value to the team.

He admitted that they played two games without their best player, leader, and captain, but the other players stepped up.

He believes that having Achraf would make a difference, of course. He considers him the best player in Africa and one of the best worldwide.

Hakimi admitted he was annoyed about missing the first two games. He also said he was bummed out that Moroccan fans booed the team during the Mali game.

The defender, who was part of PSG's Champions League-winning team last season, said that he understands the fans' desire for quick wins. He also reminded them to show respect for their opponents.

He thinks the boos are uncalled for, and he wants the fans' support.

He recalled a similar situation at Paris Saint-Germain, where fans criticized the team for not winning in the Champions League. Despite the criticism, they went on to win the Champions League.

He feels that with the fans' backing, they could become African champions together.

Hakimi also mentioned how happy he was to see his friend and former PSG teammate, Kylian Mbappe, who now plays for Real Madrid, in the stands during the Mali game.

He said it's awesome to have his buddy in Morocco, adding that Mbappe loves the country, visits with his family whenever he can, and enjoys the local food.

Nigeria Survives Late Tunisia Scare

Ademola Lookman was on fire with 2 assists and a goal as the Super Eagles edged out Tunisia 3-2 on Saturday night to grab a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) knockout stage in Morocco.

This five-goal game put the Super Eagles on top of Group C with six points. Tunisia's behind them with three. Tanzania and Uganda drew 1-1, leaving them in third and fourth place with one point each after two games.

Victor Osimhen, who plays for Galatasaray, scored Nigeria's first goal in the 44th minute, heading in a sweet cross from Ademola Lookman. Nigeria went into halftime leading 1-0. It was Osimhen's second goal in 10 AFCON games for Nigeria.

He needs five more goals to tie Rashidi Yekini, Nigeria's all-time top scorer.

Wilfred Ndidi, the team's new captain, scored his first goal for Nigeria in the 50th minute, heading in a corner kick from Ademola Lookman. It was his first goal since joining the national team in October 2015.

The Super Eagles looked like they were cruising to an easy win when Ademola Lookman scored from inside the box in the 67th minute, set up by Osimhen. That goal sparked a comeback from Tunisia.

The North Africans scored in the 74th minute with a header from a free kick.

Then, they made things tense by scoring from a penalty after VAR spotted a handball by Bright Osayi-Samuel.

Nigeria hung on to win and move on to the Round of 16 in Morocco 2025.

After the game, Ademola Lookman, who was named CAF Man of the Match, said the Super Eagles are on the right track at the 2025 AFCON after making it to the Round of 16.

"We're headed in the right direction," said Atalanta's Ademola Lookman after the exciting match. We were on top before Tunisia had their moment and scored two goals.

The fans should keep supporting us.

AFCON UPDATE: MOROCCO'S QUALIFICATION STALLED. WILL THEY TOP GROUP A AFTER THE ZAMBIA FINALE?

Mohamed Salah’s penalty sends 10-man Egypt to the AFCON last 16, while hosts Morocco suffer a 1-1 draw against a resilient Mali.

Morocco remains top of Group A despite 1-1 draw with Mali.

Morocco blew their chance to lock in a spot in the Africa Cup of Nations knockout stage, tying 1-1 with Mali on Friday. But Mohamed Salah's penalty shot gave Egypt a 1-0 victory over South Africa, pushing them into the final 16.

The game between Morocco and Mali in Rabat was all about penalty kicks. Brahim Diaz scored one for Morocco way late in the first half, but Lassine Sinayoko evened the score around the 64th minute.

The match, watched by nearly 64,000 fans, including France's captain Kylian Mbappe, stopped Morocco's winning streak at 19 games.

So, Morocco hasn't officially made it to the last 16 yet, but they're still leading their group with four points from two games.

Mali is next with two points, tied with Zambia, who earlier had a 0-0 draw with Comoros in Casablanca.

Morocco plays Zambia on Monday, and if they win, they'll finish as the group's top team.

We were great in the first half and had scoring chances. But we kind of fell apart in the second half. We stopped playing well and struggled. Still, this game will help us get better, said Morocco's Azzedine Ounahi.

We need to grab all three points in the next game and finish first in the group.

Achraf Hakimi, Morocco's captain, didn't play again to rest his recovering ankle.

Morocco got their penalty when Mali's Nathan Gassama touched the ball with his hand while trying to defend against Diaz. After watching the video replay, the referee pointed to the spot.

Diaz shot past the goalie for his second goal of the tourney. Then Mali got their own penalty about an hour in.

Sinayoko was fouled by Jawad El Yamiq. Again, after a video review, a penalty was awarded.

Sinayoko, who plays for Auxerre, scored, and Mali held on for a draw through 10 minutes of extra time. The home fans booed at the end.

- Salah Helps Egypt Beat South Africa -

In Agadir, Liverpool's Salah scored a penalty right before halftime, making Egypt the first team to reach the knockout rounds.

South Africa felt robbed, though, when they weren't given a penalty near the end of the game after Yasser Ibrahim seemed to touch the ball with his hand inside the box.

Egypt's penalty happened after a South African player, Khuliso Mudau, hit Salah in the eye with his left arm. The ref checked the video and made the call.

Salah nailed the penalty while the goalie guessed wrong.

More drama happened when Mohamed Hany stomped on Teboho Mokoena, earning him a second yellow card and an ejection.

Even with the extra player, South Africa couldn't score, and then the ref didn't give them a penalty. Egypt hung on for the win.

After two rounds in Group B, Egypt has six points and is guaranteed to finish in the top two.

South Africa has three points, while Angola and Zimbabwe each have one after a 1-1 tie in Marrakesh.

I'm thrilled with the result, of course. It was a tough match; they controlled most of it. "They can hold the ball for a long time, so I think our strategy worked well," said Salah.

We got the three points, which is what matters most. The crowd was amazing. Hopefully, we can keep this up.

South Africa's coach, Hugo Broos, said, The penalty for Egypt was a joke, a real joke.

And near the end, when their guy's arm was way out, and the ball hit it, that should have been a penalty for us.
