AFCON GROUP B DECIDER: EGYPT AND SOUTH AFRICA BATTLE FOR TOP SPOT TODAY

Mohamed Salah looks to end Egypt’s 19-year winless run against South Africa in this high-stakes AFCON 2025 showdown.

AFCON Group B Decider: Egypt and South Africa Battle for Top Spot Today
Can Mohamed Salah Finally Overcome South Africa

After winning their opening games in the Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt and South Africa will face off in Agadir on Friday. This match will likely decide who wins Group B.

Mohamed Salah scored the winning goal against Zimbabwe just before the final whistle, while Lyle Foster secured South Africa's win against Angola. Both teams are now level in the group before their second matches.

Match in Preview

Hossam Hassan has said that Egypt needs to play better after Zimbabwe gave them a scare in their first game.

Egypt, which was expected to win easily, fell behind in the first half. It looked like they didn't have any answers until Omar Marmoush scored a clever goal to tie the game.

With a draw seeming almost certain, Salah scored the winning goal in stoppage time. He also became the first Egyptian player to score in five different Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

Still, Egypt knows they have to step up their game against South Africa on Friday, a team they haven't beaten since November 2006.

Egypt lost 1-0 to South Africa the last time they played each other in a major tournament (AFCON 2019 in Cairo). The Egyptian team knows they can't take this game lightly, especially since South Africa has gotten much better.

Hugo Broos, who previously led Cameroon to a continental title win over Egypt in 2017, is looking to defeat the seven-time African champions again this weekend.

Broos didn't have to wait as long as Hassan to see his team win their first match. However, there was a long wait after Show tied the game for Angola in the 35th minute, following Oswin Appollis' goal that put South Africa ahead.

Burnley's Foster scored the winning goal with 11 minutes left, giving South Africa a much-needed win on Monday.

Foster is the first South African Premier League player to score at the Cup of Nations since Phil Masinga (formerly of Leeds United) scored against Cameroon in 1996.

These stats won't matter much if South Africa doesn't play well against Egypt. If they win, South Africa could guarantee itself a spot in the last 16.

Team Updates

Trezeguet, who was Egypt's key player in the AFCON qualifiers, didn't play great on Monday, but he's still expected to start.

The main player to watch is Salah, who put his Liverpool struggles behind him to score the winning goal after Marmoush (Manchester City star) tied the game.

Mohamed Hamdi may be injured after the Zimbabwe game, making him questionable for this weekend. Ahmed Fatouh might replace him at left-back.

South Africa didn't have any injuries in their win over Angola, so they might field the same starting players.

After scoring and assisting against Angola, Foster will be looking to make another big impact for his country.

Teboho Mokoena is known for his powerful long-range shots, so he'll be a threat from a distance at Stade Adrar.

Possible Starting Lineups:

Egypt:

El Shenawy; Hany, Ibrahim, Abdelmaguid, Fatouh; Attia, Fathy; Salah, Marmoush, Trezeguet; Mohamed

South Africa:

Williams; Mudau, Ngezana, Mbokazi, Modiba; Mokoena, Sithole; Nkota, Mbule, Appollis; Foster

MUST WIN: ZAMBIA AND COMOROS BATTLE FOR AFCON SURVIVAL THIS FRIDAY IN CASABLANCA

Patson Daka aims to lead Zambia to their first AFCON win since 2012 as they face a resilient Comoros side in Casablanca.

Can Zambia Finally Break Their AFCON Curse Against Comoros

On Friday, Zambia and Comoros face off at Stade Mohammed V in their second Group A match at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Zambia sits second in the group after a 1-1 draw with Mali in their first game. Comoros is at the bottom after losing 2-0 to Morocco.

Match outlook

Zambia didn't get all three points in their first match, but they'll take the draw, especially since they had lost their previous four games.

They fell behind when Lassine Sinayoko scored, and they didn't get many chances until Patson Daka's late header tied the game.

That result means Zambia hasn't won in 10 tournament games (two losses, eight draws).

Going into the Comoros game, Zambia should feel good. A win would really help their chances of moving past the group stage.

However, they haven't won in their last three games against Comoros in the past two years, with one draw and two losses.

They only had two good scoring chances against Mali, so they need to be better on offence.

Comoros knew their first game against Morocco would be tough, with the possibility of getting beaten badly by the home team.

But Stefano Cusin's team played well in the first half, holding Morocco to a 0-0 tie. They couldn't hold on in the second half and gave up two goals.

That loss means Comoros hasn't won in their last five games (not counting penalty shootout wins), and they've lost the last four.

Another loss to Zambia would be bad, but the Comoros would be more worried about getting knocked out in the first round.

But Cusin's team can be encouraged by their recent record against Zambia. They haven't lost to them (W2, D1) since September 2023.

Team updates

Even though Zambia didn't play great in their first game, coach Sichone will likely stick with the same starting lineup.

If he makes any changes, Francis Mwansa, who saved a penalty against El Bilal Toure, should be in goal again.

The defence of Mathews Banda, Benson Sakala, Dominic Chanda, and Frankie Musonda should also stay the same.

After his late goal against Mali, Leicester City's Patson Daka should start up front again, with Lameck Banda and Fashion Sakala on the wings.

Like Zambia, Comoros will probably use the same lineup. Yannick Pandor, who also saved a penalty, should be in goal.

Standard Liege striker Rafik Said will be the main scoring threat.

Possible Zambia starting lineup:

Mwansa; M. Banda, B. Sakala, Chanda, Musonda; Chaiwa, Kangwa, Tembo; F. Sakala, Daka, L. Banda

Possible Comoros starting lineup:

Pandor; Toibubu, Soilihi, Kari, Boura; B. Youssouf, Z. Youssouf, Mohammed, Selemani; N’Changama, Said

AFCON PREVIEW: ANALYZING BENIN VS BOTSWANA AS GROUP D QUALIFICATION REACHES BOILING POINT

Benin and Botswana meet this Saturday in a must-win AFCON clash. Can Benin's returning stars secure their first Group D victory?

Benin Welcomes Back Five Key Starters for Must-Win Botswana Clash.

Benin and Botswana, both trying to bounce back from losses at the start of the Africa Cup of Nations, are going head-to-head this Saturday at Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah. They both need a win to keep their hopes of moving forward in the competition alive.

Benin almost pulled off a tie against Congo DR in their last game, but Botswana got beaten pretty badly, 3-0, by Senegal.

Match in Detail

Even though Benin wasn't doing so hot coming into the Nations Cup, they did show some fight against the Congo DR.

Still, they ended up losing 1-0 after a goal in the first part of the match. A later goal was disallowed.

The team has lost three games in a row now, and they haven't been scoring, which is a worry.

If Benin wants to avoid getting knocked out in the group stage again, they have to win against Botswana. If they lose, their chances of going further are pretty much done.

Botswana is the lowest-ranked team in the group, so Benin will see this as their best shot at grabbing a win before they have to play Senegal, which will be difficult.

Botswana's last game saw them lose to Senegal, who are one of the teams favoured to win the whole thing. Senegal won 3-0.

Botswana held them off for a while, but once Senegal scored, things fell apart.

The team hasn't kept a clean sheet in seven games, and they haven't won in eight.

After the first games, Botswana is at the bottom of Group D. It's going to be tough for them to make it to the next round, especially since this is only the second time they've been in the competition in the last 13 years.

They probably remember their game against Guinea back in 2012, where they lost 6-1, which is still their worst loss ever in the competition.

Team Updates

Benin is getting Junior Olaitan, Steve Mounie, Andreas Hountondji, Mohamed Tijani, and Marcel Dandjinou back from suspension, which gives them more options.

Mounie and Hountondji are likely to be in the starting lineup.

Goitseone Phoko, the goalie, had a great first game for Botswana, making a ton of saves. He'll probably start again.

Kabelo Seakanyeng has scored the most goals for Botswana of any player still on the team, but he hasn't scored in a while, so the team needs to find someone else who can put the ball in the net.

Benin's possible lineup:

Dandjinou, Tijani, Verdon, Roche, Moumini, Ouorou, Dodo, Imourane, Kiki, Mounie, and Olaitan

Botswana's possible lineup:

Phoko, Johnson, Ditlhokwe, Gaolaolwe, Velaphi, Ditsele, Seakanyeng, Mohutsiwa, Cooper, Orebonye, and Kebatho
