BAYERN BLUEPRINT: DANNY RöHL SEEKS JOHN SOUTTAR-LIKE LEADERS TO MENTOR RANGERS YOUNGSTERS
Rangers coach Danny Röhl confirms John Souttar contract talks, stressing the defender's leadership is crucial for balancing the squad with young, exciting players.
Rangers coach Danny Röhl thinks having leaders like John Souttar is key to the club's future.
Souttar's contract ends this season, but the Ibrox boss said they're talking about a new deal.
Back in August, Souttar said about his future, I love it here. I haven't heard much lately, so I'm just training hard.
With a new offer on the table, Röhl wants the 29-year-old to stay.
"The good thing is I have people who handle contracts," he said.
Since I got here, John's been a core part of the team. He's helped us a lot. He knows this league and what it means to play for Rangers.
It's important we have experienced leaders. We can build our team with young, exciting players around them. The whole group matters, so we'll see what happens.
"We've made our intentions clear," he said about Souttar's future. Hopefully, he'll be back from injury soon, especially with our center-back situation and Nasser leaving for AFCON. We're hoping to get Dujon back for a few minutes too.
Souttar joined Rangers in 2022 from Hearts, after playing three years at Dundee United. He's played 117 games for Rangers.
Röhl, who used to work under Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich and for Germany, was asked if he needs more leaders like Souttar.
"It's all about balance," he said. You need leaders in some spots. When I think back to my time in Munich, we had a core with guys like Alaba, Kimmich, Müller, Lewandowski, and Neuer.
You can play young players around a core like that. It's good to have stability at times, and that's what we're aiming for, but balance is key.
I like playing young, exciting players too. Mikey Moore is a great example. But they need experienced players around them who get what it means to play here.
We're building something this year, and I'm positive we'll find that balance. With good results, we'll grow as a team.

HEARTBREAK: MARSHALL MUNETSI BLASTS COACH AFTER 2025 AFCON SNUB DESPITE WOLVES' OFFER
Warriors assistant captain Marshall Munetsi is out of the AFCON squad, claiming ZIFA decided without talking to him, despite his club offering medical support. Defender Jordan Zemura is also out injured.
Marshall Munetsi's absence from Zimbabwe's national team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco has stirred debate.
Coach Marian “Mario” Marinica revealed the Warriors' final squad for the tournament, leaving out the Wolves forward. Munetsi had sustained a calf injury during a Premier League game against Nottingham Forest on December 3rd.
Munetsi, Zimbabwe's assistant captain, expressed his disappointment, saying the decision was made without talking to him.
He mentioned that the injury was manageable and that his club had offered medical support through the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) to help him play in Morocco. He has one league goal and one assist in 13 appearances this season.
‘I respect the coach’s decisions.’
This hurts because representing the Warriors has always been a dream, and wearing our colours is the greatest honour. AFCON would have been even more special, Munetsi shared on social media.
“I had an injury, but my club, Wolves, told the association I was recovering well and offered medical support for me to play at AFCON. Sadly, I didn't get any follow-up, and choices were made without clear reasons.
Munetsi still supports the Warriors and respects the coach's choices, ready to play for his country when called upon.
Even though I’m hurt, I still strongly support the team. I respect the coach’s decisions and support the boys. I’ll always be ready to defend my country, Munetsi added.
Zimbabwe will face Egypt in the opener
Besides Munetsi, Udinese defender Jordan Zemura is also out due to injury. The 26-year-old, who injured his thigh, said he was disappointed to miss AFCON.
“You work hard for small wins. "You give everything and sacrifice to represent your country," Zemura said.
“You fight until you can’t anymore, just to represent your homeland. Now I’ve fallen at the last moment. My body has given up; I guess that’s the cost.”
Zemura wished the Warriors well and asked fans to support the team.
“I’ll be back, and I will defend these colours again. I’ll lead this team again. I wish my fellow Warriors all the best in Morocco, and I wish I could be there with you.
“I know you will be fine and make us proud. I wish my country the best. Go and defend our colours and make us proud. I’m sorry I can’t be there.”
Zimbabwe is in Group B with Angola, Egypt, and South Africa, starting against Egypt on December 22nd.
