ANDONI IRAOLA'S EXIT: SELLING ANTOINE SEMENYO COULD PUSH BOURNEMOUTH COACH TOWARDS DOOR
Football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley suggests Andoni Iraola's contract renewal hinges on the potential sale of Antoine Semenyo and the club's future transfer policy.
Andoni Iraola's future with Bournemouth could depend on how the club decides to spend the money if they sell Antoine Semenyo.
Football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley told Football Insider that Iraola will have to decide if he's okay with losing another key player.
Iraola's contract ends this season, and he hasn't committed to staying.
Antoine Semenyo has a £65 million release clause in his contract, which he signed over the summer. Several Premier League teams want him in January.
Plumley thinks Iraola's goals might lead him to leave Bournemouth at the end of the season.
Plumley said that Bournemouth sold three of their main defenders last summer for good money, but they had to rebuild their defense a bit. Semenyo could be next. The manager is likely thinking about this, but the club is also doing other things. They recently opened a new, modern training facility.
He adds that Bournemouth seems like a stable Premier League club, which is a good thing. If they keep selling players for high fees, the manager will have to decide if that fits with his plans, and he might want to move somewhere else. The manager will always be considering his options, and Semenyo's situation is part of that.
The way the season plays out and where they finish in the league will also be a factor.
Bournemouth's recent 0-0 draw against Chelsea means they haven't won in six Premier League games.
They've dropped to 13th place, but they're only five points away from a European spot.
Iraola's team finished ninth last season. Losing Semenyo and finishing lower in the league this season might decide his future with the club.
DEFENSIVE OPTIONS: ANALYZING RéGIS LE BRIS'S STRATEGY FOR NEWCASTLE UNITED CLASH
Sunderland's Régis Le Bris confirms key defender Reinildo is fit for the Wear-Tyne Derby against Newcastle. The manager is considering flexible defensive formations for the intense clash.
Sunderland is set to play the Wear-Tyne derby at the Stadium of Light this Sunday.
Régis Le Bris has said that Reinildo is ready to play against Newcastle United in the Wear-Tyne derby this Sunday.
The left back was out due to a groin problem when the Black Cats lost 3-0 to Manchester City last Saturday, but he was back in training on Thursday before the game. Le Bris also said that Habib Diarra will miss the game as he recovers from groin surgery, as expected.
The midfielder might still go to AFCON, but he probably won't play in the first few games of the tournament.
“Reinildo is ready. He practised on Thursday and again today,” Le Bris said.
“Habib will practice with the team next week. He’ll probably need one or two weeks to get back to his best after his rehab. Now it's up to his national team. If they want to pick him, they can.”
Dennis Cirkin is also ready after playing three full games for the U21S in the last few weeks. He might be back in the squad since Luke O’Nien is suspended. He will likely play a bigger part when Reinildo and Arthur Masuaku leave for AFCON next week.
“He's ready and has been training well for two or three weeks. He's with the team, and it's good because we don't have many injuries right now. That's important for this part of the season.”
Régis Le Bris on formations ahead of the Newcastle United game
Le Bris didn't reveal whether he will use a four- or five-man defence for the game, but he said that having options is good for his team.
Le Bris said, “I won’t say!
“We have different choices, which is good. The team knows how to be flexible, which helps us. If plan A works, great. If not, we can switch to something else. That's good for us.”
NEXT MAN UP: DANIEL FARKE'S MESSAGE AMID MOUNTING LEEDS INJURY LIST FOR SUNDAY
Leeds United striker Lukas Nmecha is officially ruled out of the Brentford clash after a re-scan confirmed his hamstring injury has not completely healed. Daniel Farke hopes for a Palace return.
Before Sunday's game against Brentford, Leeds United boss Daniel Farke spoke with the press.
Farke confirmed that striker Lukas Nmecha is still not back to training with the team. He will not be playing in the weekend game against Brentford.
Nmecha was also absent from last weekend’s 3-3 draw at home against Liverpool due to a hamstring injury picked up against Chelsea the Wednesday before. Farke had hoped Nmecha would be ready for Sunday’s game. After more tests, he’s been ruled out again.
“Sadly, he will miss this game,” Farke said this Friday about Nmecha. Another scan shows that he hasn’t completely healed, so he’s out for this one.
“It’s tough. He needs to get back to team training first. I want him back as soon as I can. I’m hoping he’ll be ready for the Crystal Palace game, but we’ll see how it goes day by day.
“We’ll decide game by game. First, he needs to train with the team, and he hasn’t done that yet. He’s working individually with our rehab coaches, so there’s no chance he’ll play this weekend.”
Sean Longstaff is still out with a calf injury from last month’s loss against Aston Villa. He’s been recovering for three weeks, with another one to three weeks to go. Winger Dan James will probably be out until at least mid-January because of a hamstring tendon injury.
Daniel Farke on Leeds United Injuries:
“It’s hard when Sean Longstaff, Daniel James, and Lukas are important for us,” Farke said. “You want them all available, but it’s Premier League football during a busy December. You expect players to miss time because of sickness, injuries, or yellow cards.
“This gives other players a chance to step up. We’re not making excuses, just like we didn’t when Sean or DJ were out in recent weeks. We’re not feeling sorry for ourselves either. We’re going with what we’ve got.
“After a tough week, there are always some minor injuries. Nothing too bad, so everyone else should be ready.”
Brentford will be without German forward Kevin Schade, who is suspended due to his fifth yellow card of the season from last weekend’s game against Tottenham Hotspur. Fabio Carvalho, Antoni Milambo, and Josh Dasilva are still on the sidelines. Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson may be back in the squad after recovering from a knock.
