SPECIAL TALENT: LAMINE YAMAL'S 73 GOALS/ASSISTS THREATEN CHELSEA'S DEFENSE
Chelsea's Marc Cucurella jokingly warns he's ready for a "brutal battle" against Barcelona's Lamine Yamal. The Spanish teammates face off at Stamford Bridge, with Cucurella also comparing Yamal to Chelsea's Estevao.
Chelsea's Marc Cucurella jokingly warned Lamine Yamal that he's ready for a tough match as Chelsea hosts Barcelona tonight at Stamford Bridge.
Cucurella will face his Spanish teammate for the first time, with the Blues left-back tasked with stopping one of Europe's most dangerous forwards.
Yamal has been a sensation since joining Barca's first team in 2023. The 18-year-old has scored 31 goals and assisted 42 in 127 games for the team across all competitions.
The Spain international has quickly become a feared opponent for full-backs, but Cucurella seems eager for the challenge tonight.
It's hard to play against guys like that because they're super talented, Cucurella said. It's not just Lamine against Cucurella; it's a big game. We all need to step up.
Cucurella jokingly added that he's told Estevao Willian to wear shin pads in training as he prepares for the game against Barcelona.
Because of their age, position, and skill, people have compared Estevao and Yamal.
When asked to compare them, Cucurella said, They're both special players with loads of talent. They always want the ball and try to take players on. They can decide games.
Maybe the only difference is that Lamine has been playing in Europe for a few seasons, and Estevao is just arriving. But he's doing great, improving all the time.
They're both funny guys who love the game and always have a smile on their faces. If they're happy, they play well.
Enzo Maresca is happy with how Estevao is settling in and improving. Maresca thinks Estevao, who didn't play in the win over Burnley on Saturday, could become a big player at Stamford Bridge. However, the Italian didn't want to put too much pressure on the Brazilian by comparing him to Yamal.
Estevao will be an important player for this club, Maresca said. For me, the most important thing is that he enjoys playing, is happy, and focuses on improving himself every day. If he works hard, he'll become a top player for this club.
REOPENING AND WIN: HANSI FLICK CALLS BARCELONA RETURN TO CAMP NOU A PERFECT DAY
Hansi Flick hailed a "perfect day" as Barcelona marked their Camp Nou return with a 4-0 win over Athletic Club, sending them top of La Liga. The German coach fulfilled a dream to manage at the iconic stadium.
The FC Barcelona coach, Hansi Flick, felt just like Lou Reed, calling it a 'perfect day' after his team happily returned to their Camp Nou stadium. To celebrate going back, the team easily won against Athletic Club with a score of 4-0, putting them in first place in La Liga.
Flick had already visited the famous stadium when he managed a team from a lower level, because Nike gave him tickets for selling so many of their sneakers.
While sitting in the stands of the Catalan stadium, the German told himself he would someday sit on the home team's bench, a wish that came true now that Barca reopened a Camp Nou that was partly finished and fixed up for the first time since the spring of 2023.
“For me, the practice we had ten days ago also felt amazing, especially when I walked onto the field and saw all the fans. I had been here before, and I promised myself that one day I wanted to be sitting here on this bench, and it feels like my dream is really happening,” Flick said.
“If you really try and always believe, you can achieve anything. We just need to keep working hard, always remember our good qualities and strengths, and work well together as a team.”
Talking about the game itself, Flick said it was a special time “for everyone.”
“Being back here, inside the stadium, made me feel something I can't even describe. Also, we won and got three points, which was hard, especially in the first half. But we didn't let them score any goals, and everything went well. Four goals and three points made it a perfect day for us,” he said happily.
Flick said that even though he respects Athletic Club, he was “very happy with how we played”.
“Everything went well, and the players showed they worked great together. I am definitely happy, and all my coaches feel the same way about being in this stadium. We need to be patient and get better slowly. We are happy to be back home. I am very positive and we are completely focused, trying to do our best,” the manager also said.
FC Barcelona fans don't need to worry about Balde.
Because the left back was taken out of the game at halftime because of a head injury, Flick told the fans that Alejandro Balde is okay.
“He is fine. We decided to take him out just to be careful, because it happened right before halftime,” Flick explained.
After winning and getting back to first place in La Liga before Real Madrid played, FC Barcelona is going to play against Chelsea away from home in the Champions League on Tuesday.
LEGEND'S MARK: LEWANDOWSKI WRITES HISTORY WITH FIRST GOAL AT BARCA'S NEW HOME
Robert Lewandowski scored the historic first goal as Barcelona celebrated their emotional return to a partially renovated Camp Nou, beating Athletic Club to go level with Real Madrid in La Liga.
The experienced forward put the ball in the net just four minutes into the game, which kicked off celebrations for Barca's return to their home ground following a two-and-a-half-year absence.
Barca initially intended to welcome fans back to Camp Nou a year prior, but the reopening was delayed repeatedly due to construction setbacks and various other challenges.
"This day held significance not just for me, but for everyone involved. I am very pleased that I had the opportunity to score the opening goal upon our return to Camp Nou," Lewandowski shared with Barca One.
"Having played in numerous stadiums, I can say that this one has a unique atmosphere. I am very proud of both myself and the team, as we performed exceptionally well today and secured a victory.
"I believe that scoring the first goal here is an achievement that I will always cherish."
The victory put Barca on equal footing with Real Madrid at the top of La Liga and marked a step up from the team's play in recent games.
"A few days prior, upon my return from representing my country, I had a strong feeling that something extraordinary was on the horizon," Lewandowski continued.
"We all are aware that this particular match will be etched in our memories for years to come."
Barca's coach, Hansi Flick, expressed his admiration for the former Bayern Munich striker.
"He's a player who, when presented with an opportunity, almost always converts it into a goal," Flick commented to reporters.
"It was crucial for us to score early today, as it boosted our confidence."
Approximately 45,000 supporters occupied the three available stands, while the stadium's third tier was still being built. The completion of the project is now anticipated in 2027, a year behind the initial timeline.
