In an effort to spur more expansion throughout the league, Lionel Messi, a forward for Inter Miami, has urged Major League Soccer to loosen its spending regulations.
Although the rules are intended to promote parity throughout the competition, salary caps and special squad-building regulations have long caused confusion among non-U.S. viewers—a noticeable distinction from the largest soccer leagues in Europe and other countries.
Major league leaders, such as commissioner Don Garber, have openly defended MLS's financial rules, but Messi thinks the league will not realise its full potential unless those expenditure caps are loosened.
When asked how he would alter Major League Soccer, Messi responded to NBC by saying, "Well, for starters, every team should have the opportunity to bring in players and sign anybody each team wants—without constraints or rules for players to bring them in."
"I do not believe that all American teams or clubs have the authority to do so right now, and I believe that many more significant players would arrive and contribute to the development of the United States if they were allowed the freedom."
When asked if he had contributed to the growth of soccer in the US since his arrival in 2023, Messi candidly said, "I think so."
With 29 goals and 16 assists in just 28 games, the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player just finished what was perhaps the best regular season in MLS history for Miami, who are now one of the favourites to win the MLS Cup later this year.
Messi was quick to commend Miami for taking the financial risk of assembling a club around him, using the team's international renown as support for his demands for loosened spending regulations. Messi aims to carry his skills all the way to the 2026 World Cup next summer.
"The Inter Miami brand is very powerful now, both in the United States and internationally," Messi remarked. "I believe the club had a significant transformation and expanded in all aspects, both athletically and institutionally, but I also believe it has a lot more room to grow and keep getting better in all aspects.
"I believe that soccer can expand in the United States. There are still significant adjustments that need to be made, in my opinion, but there is a solid basis in place where clubs are ready and eager for that expansion, so I believe the moment has come.

In Mexico, McLaren CEO Andrea Stella implied that Red Bull's choice to continue working on its 2025 vehicle was a reflection of a lack of clarity surrounding the upcoming Red Bull-Ford power unit.
However, that notion has been rejected by team manager Laurent Mekies and Dr. Helmut Marko.
Mekies stated it has nothing to do with 2026.
"We would have too many unanswered questions going into 2026 if we did not get the most out of this car by the end of the season. We made the decision to spend more money on this vehicle in order to fix its shortcomings and increase its speed.
It greatly increases our confidence in our 2026 tools, strategies, and techniques. Yes, the new project will require less time and effort, but it was a deliberate choice. Performance has nothing to do with it.
According to the Frenchman, the team's strategy is centered on comprehension rather than risk. "We think there will be a net benefit, so we are doing this. We can apply our methods to 2026 and are now verifying them. If it led to difficulties, we would not do it.
Yes, there is a cost, but we think it is worthwhile.
Red Bull's momentum was halted by Mexico as Norris resumed his winning ways, despite Verstappen's recent race surge. Despite replacing an unproductive Oscar Piastri as the championship leader, Verstappen actually cut his overall lead to 36 points.

When Jannik Sinner's decision to skip the 2025 Davis Cup Finals next month was brought up again, he appeared a little miffed.

It will be interesting to watch if the Grand Slams address those issues and make adjustments in 2026.
