Frenkie de Jong confirms he is "very close" to signing a new contract with Barcelona. The Dutch midfielder stated he intends to stay at the club for the rest of his career.
Reports that Barcelona and Frenkie de Jong are about to agree on a new deal have been going around for a few days.
The contract of the 28-year-old midfielder, who is also one of the team's captains, expires at the conclusion of the current campaign.
The Blaugrana had therefore made it their first goal to renew his contract as soon as feasible.
Several trustworthy sources have recently revealed that a verbal agreement has been reached over a new deal, despite several obstacles along the road. Only a few minor details need to be finalised before an official announcement is made.
De Jong affirms
De Jong was questioned about the rumours regarding his contract renewal and whether they were true when he was abroad on national team duty with the Netherlands.
The Barcelona midfielder responded by essentially confirming that his extension is finalised, stating (via Fabrizio Romano):
"Yes, like I usually say, I am going to essentially extend my Barcelona contract."
He continued, saying, "I cannot say anything for now, but we are extremely near, and if there is true news, you will hear about it."
The midfield staple responded as follows when asked if he would be staying at Barcelona for an extended period of time:
"I intend to spend the remainder of my career at Barcelona. When I was a kid, I longed to be here. We have a fantastic squad now, and I want to take home the major awards.
De Jong will extend through 2029.
De Jong will be adding three extra years to his present contract, which is set to expire in the summer of 2029, as previously reported.
The Barcelona captain is projected to make about €12 million (gross) a year, and as part of the deal, he will also alter his pay to reflect the club's existing wage structure.
Despite his ups and downs throughout his six years in Catalonia, De Jong has blossomed under Hansi Flick in the last 12 months and will be a vital member going forward.

Lucas Bergvall’s interesting, too; he almost joined Barcelona before picking Spurs. Injuries and lack of minutes have slowed him down in London, but Barcelona hasn’t stopped believing he’s got huge potential. They could finally land him after missing out on him a couple of years ago.
In defence, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are high on Barca’s wish list. Both guys have proven themselves in the Premier League, and adding them would instantly boost Barcelona’s options at the back. Van de Ven stands out for his speed and ability to play from deep; he’d be a great partner for Pau Cubarsi, and together they could form one of Europe’s most balanced defensive duos.
Pedro Porro’s name is also in the mix. He’d fit right into Barcelona’s attacking style at right-back, but whether they go for him depends on what happens with Jules Kounde. If Barcelona decides to sell Kounde to help balance the books, Porro’s seen as the go-to replacement to deliver attacking runs from defence, which Hansi Flick wants.
All this talk hangs on how Tottenham finishes the season. There are only four Premier League games left, and if Spurs manage to stay up, these deals get way trickier. If they go down, expect a rush of bids not just from Barcelona but also from clubs all over Europe. Still, the chance to play at Camp Nou and return to Champions League football is a big draw, so Barcelona might have the upper hand as things heat up this summer.
